Chigwell & Hainault Synagogue Cheder Classes

Chigwell and Hainault Cheder aims to provide a fun, hands-on approach to Jewish Education for our youngsters. Catering for children from secular schools aged from 7+ to pre-bar/bat mitzvah, our top priority is teaching the children to read Hebrew as fluently as possible.  Most of our children are Chigwell and Hainault members, but we welcome application from non-members if there are spaces available.

Our headteacher Mrs Rodal continues our tradition of providing a warm environment for the children, together with her team of teachers and helpers drawn from the local community. The children develop at their own pace, supported by our enthusiastic teenage reading assistants.

A regular treat for the children has been visits from practical workshops. In the past we have had the ‘Shofar Factory’, ‘Kashrut workshop’, ‘Matzah factory’ and ‘Olive Press’, together with in house Challah baking. We also have an annual Practice Seder, ‘Pizza in the Hut’ Succah Party and Chanukah party, together with participating actively in the Shul Purim events. We have had a visit from a Sefer showing how a torah scroll is written and Israel activity sessions.  Our older children produce a beautiful Israel Project as part of their bar/bat mitzvah studies.

Chigwell and Hainault Cheder is light years away from the boring Hebrew classes of years gone by. We hope the children will develop a love of Judaism and feel comfortable in shul by learning in a more contemporary way, using audiovisual aids and interactive learning styles.

The classes are held on Sunday mornings and follow the school year. For more information please contact the synagogue office.
