Edgware Wanderers II v Chigwell and Hainault Edgware Wanderers II 182 for 5 Edgware Wanderers II won by 108 runs This early season friendly turned out as a rather one sided affair. Both sides fielded elevens of an experimental nature with Edgware drafting in 4 first eleven players and Chigwell fielding two players new to the side. Chigwell used 7 bowlers and Edgware used 9, testament to the character of this 'practice' match. It was an enjoyable afternoon despite temperatures and wind conditions that would not have been out of place in February, let alone early May. The outstanding performance of the afternoon came from Stern, the Edgware opening bat, who was on the field for the entire match, scoring an unbeaten 75 in Edgware's 35 overs. This was steadily accumulated in the main, punctuated by several boundaries. As it turned out this was sufficient to defeat Chigwell without the participation of his team-mates, although many of them chipped in useful innings. Following the opening stand with Goddard (22), Edgware lost three wickets in relatively quick succession before Reston came to the wicket to contribute a useful 32 runs. On his dismissal Winborne arrived to pressurise the Chigwell attack still further with a quickly accumulated 28 not out. Chigwell bowled and fielded diligently in difficult circumstances with Gavin Stollar contributing 2 for 28 on his Chigwell debut; the second of these wickets being captured with spectacular assistance from a somersaulting catch from Matthew Murray. Sinclair (1 for 30) and captain Danny Myers (1 for 25) contributed the other bowlers wickets, and the other debutant Ben Scott combined well with keeper Michael Carson to complete a run out. In the main Chigwell's innings was a defensive affair, in the main being able to cope with a hostile attack especially early in the innings, but far less able to accumulate the runs required. Joint top scorers were Danny Myers (18) and Stuart Kaye (18 n.o.) with Richard Allen (11) being the only other player to achieve double figures. Once Edgware were through the upper part of Chigwell's order a mini-collapse ensued as the team degenerated from 60 for 5 to 65 for 9 but by then it was way too late anyway. Edgware's bowling was steady throughout, pace and accuracy not always reaping the rewards it deserved. Mendelsohn achieved their best figures (3 for 6) aided in the tail end collapse by Ellis (2 for 9). But there were four other wicket takers, Winborne (1 for 7), A. Brodkin (1 for 11), T. Allen (1 for 6) and Weinberg (1 for 9) and Reston was unlucky after completing an accurate spell of four overs conceding only 4 runs. The teams are scheduled to meet several more times this season and it is hoped that future fixtures will be more evenly balanced. |
