Northwood & Pinner v Chigwell and Hainault
Sunday, May 11, 2003

Friendly Match

Northwood & Pinner won by 99 runs

Northwood&Pinner 229 for 5 (35 overs)
S.Alexander 101,D.Cohen 36no
Allen 2 for 45 off 7overs
K.Sinclair 1 for 18 off 5 overs

Chigwell&Hainault 130 all out (34.4 overs)
K.Sinclair 39, S.Warren 24
D.Cohen 3 for 9 off 6.4overs
Brown 2 for 24 off 7overs

After winning the toss, Chigwell's stand-in captain for the day Barry Shine, chose to field on a cloudy day with spots of sunshine. Despite the earlier dismissal of Muzlish for 4, Northwood set about posting a big total through the batting of their star performer, Alexander. Having endured a few nervy moments early on with an edge over the gully region in only his first over, he batted very responsibly throughout. With the support from Michael (23) and O.Shastal (29), Northwood maintained the run rate at about 6 an over through the middle of the innings. Good tight bowling from Sinclair during the middle of the innings restricted the scoring from one end but S.Alexander was always in total control after his earlier scares at the crease and made his century pleasing the home contingent. He finally perished for 101 bowled by Allen. D.Cohen (36no) contributed to the run spree in the final few overs to mount a challenging total of 229 off the full allotted overs.

Without their influential captain, Danny Myers and regular opener M.Gold (who were both away on Hammers duties), it was always going to be a tough task for the East Enders on their 1st outing of the season. It was also a chance to blood some new talent to the ranks such as Lloyd Duddridge and Barry Barnett who were making their first appearance for the club. Some tight bowling early on from Michaels restricted the scoring from one end but a bizarre run-out between H.Berlin and N.Katseph allowed Northwood to take an early initiative. After losing Allen to a flighted delivery from Brown, Chigwell were always well behind the intended target. Some fine batting from S.Warren (24), including the biggest six of the day, and an especially dogged innings by K.Sinclair (39) allowed them to get up to a reasonable total and restore team morale. In his first ever batting display, B.Barnett played like an experienced campaigner with a well-played 13 but Cohen finally finished off the tail with decent figures of 3 for 9 runs.

Overall this was a day to try out different combinations with the bat and ball in eager anticipation for the league and cup games to come. However, the day belonged to S.Alexander with a fine century that enabled Northwood & Pinner to win the game by a big margin of victory.
