Northwood and Pinner v Chigwell and Hainault Northwood and Pinner 199 for 6 Northwood and Pinner won by 61 runs Chigwell and Hainault battled hard against opposition from a higher division of the Maccabi League, but ultimately it was to no avail as the home side ran out winners by 61 runs. Phil Brown (15) and Paul Levy (10) saw Northwood and Pinner off to a steady start but ultimately it was the middle order batting that saw them accumulate a score just one short of the double century milestone. Andy Fridkin steadily accumulated 25 but a far more quickfire 50 from Alex Haffnler (who subsequently sportingly retired to allow others in his side to gain valuable batting experience) pushed the score to a level ultimately beyond the visitors reach. David Cohen (23) and Serge Weinberger (34 n.o.) added to the score with Weinberger and Haffnler achieving the 50-partnership mark in the process. Chigwell’s catching was once again an area of their game that let them down, no fewer than seven catches being dropped. It brought the ‘If only…….’ storybooks out once again but ultimately contributed to their downfall. On the other hand bowling performances were fairly steady. Captain Danny Myers bowled through at the start of the innings to achieve figures of 2 for 12 runs from his seven overs, and Stuart Kaye similarly chipped in two wickets from his spell at the end of the innings, albeit for a more expensive 53 runs. Simon Warren (1 for 28) and Kevin Sinclair (1 for 34) were the other wicket takers. Chigwell’s inning started well with a 26 run stand between Stuart Kaye (11) and Melvin Gold (9) and then Danny Myers (7) and Simon Warren (28) took up the challenge. At that stage things look set for an unlikely Chigwell challenge to the massive total facing them. However 67 for 2 soon became 80 for 6 and the opportunity had passed. Kevin Sinclair (19) and Ian Murray (27) then put on a stand of 46 for the seventh wicket to provide a glimmer of hope but this flickered away and ultimately Chigwell fell some 61 runs short and were all out with a couple of overs remaining. Northwood and Pinner used 9 bowlers in their attack, the most successful being David Rosenzweig who took three wickets for just 9 runs in his three overs. Laurie Garber was the only bowler to complete his seven over maximum and took two wickets for 36 runs, Lurie (1 for 3) and Muzlish (1 for 3) being the other successful bowlers. Chigwell had also contributed to their own downfall with both Gold and Sinclair being run out unnecessarily. The game was competitive in a friendly way and ultimately both teams will have found much to take pleasure in for the competitive portion of their season which lies ahead. |
