Chigwell and Hainault v Belmont 2nds Chigwell and Hainault won by 123 runs It was a day when everything went right for Chigwell and Hainault and Belmont 2nds enjoyed no luck at all as Chigwell's first home game of the season ended in a massive victory by 123 runs. Chigwell's innings started brightly and within 8 overs 50 runs were on the board. Barry Shine was out early but Melvin Gold (13) and Simon Warren, who top scored for Chigwell with 43 runs including a 6 and seven 4s, took the score on to 43 before Gold was dismissed. There followed a difficult period as Belmont's change bowlers Horowitz (2 for 21) and Peer (2 or 17) got on top of the batsmen for a while. However although Warren, Danny Myers (1) and Jeff Freedman (7) were all dismissed during this spell, runs flowed more freely afterwards. The enforced bowling changes, as the accurate pair ran out of overs, saw Richard Allen (38 n.o.) and Kevin Sinclair drive the score forward at a more rapid pace in a critical partnership of 53 runs before Sinclair was run out. The tail offered Allen some support but after 33.5 overs Chigwell were all out for 167 runs. It was ironic that this was Chigwell's highest score of the season but the first time they have been bowled out. The pick of the bowlers were Horowitz and Peer but all the Belmont bowlers took wickets, although the others were more expensive. Blasebeck's figures of 2 for 31 were the pick of the rest with D. Freedman (1 for 48) and Beckman (2 for 42) also chipping in. In truth Belmont were blitzed before their innings had really begun. Simon Warren (3 for 15) took 3 wickets in four balls and Danny Myers (1 for 10) took one as Belmont were reduced to 5 for 4. Remarkably for a team that finds catching difficult at the best of times, this obviously was the very best of times as Chigwell held 6 catches in the innings, the best by far being a diving, one-handed slip catch by Jeff Freedman of a fast, Warren delivery. The record should show that others were held by Shine, Allen (2), Aryeh Myers and Sinclair. Feigenbaum (10), Blasebeck (6) and J. Freeman (9 n.o.) put up some resistance but they could not hold back an exuberant Chigwell side, and the embarrassing statistic that extras (12) contributed most to their score of 44 (17.3 overs). Apart from Warren and D. Myers Chigwell used two other bowlers, both being highly successful. Richard Allen enjoyed the best bowling of 3 for 13 to vie with Simon Warren as man of the match, while Chigwell's other 30+ batsman, Kevin Sinclair took remarkable figures of 2 wickets for 1 run to help sweep up the tail. This was Chigwell second league victory of the season over Belmont which goes some way to avenge the defeat in a reverse result in the Stuart Neils Cup. The match was played in good spirit on a beautiful summer day but Chigwell will have gone home by far the happier of the two sides. |
