Edgware Wanderers II v Chigwell and Hainault Edgware Wanderers II 194 for 5 Chigwell and Hainault were outplayed in virtually all departments by an Edgware side playing to their full potential. Played on a flat wicket with cloud cover overhead the toss was always likely to be critical. It was won by Edgware who chose to bat first. The Edgware innings got off to a solid start with Nick Stern amassing 41 runs and captain Joel Sager scoring 21 before he was first man out, stumped while fishing for a a poor delivery from occasional bowler Melvin Gold which was excellently gathered by ‘keeper Barry Shine. This brought Eliezer Segal to the wicket and the passage of play that followed was the turning point of the game as Segal, who was eventually not out 69, batted aggressively with Stern against a patchy Chigwell attack. In the later part of the innings Weinberg scored a quickfire 11 and Oscar Brodkin set about the bowling in a brief cameo scoring 21 runs including Edgware’s second six of their innings. The total of 194 for 5 always looked a winning score against a Chigwell side short of several regular players. This player shortage was evident in the bowling with the 5th bowler being made up by contributions from three players (Gold, Ben Scott and Jonathan Siddely) but between them they conceded 56 runs with only Gold’s fortunate wicket in the positive column. Captain Danny Myers was the pick of the bowlers taking three wickets for 40, Michael Walton was the most economical conceding 28 runs without success in the wickets column. Kevin Sinclair returned figures of 1 for 31 and Stuart Kaye bowled a neat opening spell of 7 straight overs for 33 runs. The bowlers were not helped by a succession of dropped catches, which can often reach epidemic proportions for this side!! Batting towards that total was never going to be easy and was made more difficult when Gold was run out for just 7 runs after just a few overs. Barry Shine (8), opening the innings, continued batting with Kevin Sinclair, the latter top scoring with 16 runs. A succession of Chigwell players came and went, some staying in for a while but not excessively troubling the scorers as the relentlessly accurate bowling continued. Many of the regulars missed out but there was a patient a promising innings from Ben Scott (8) and a more aggressive cameo from Aryeh Myers (9), who hit one of only two boundaries in the entire innings. As the innings petered to a close Michael Myers came to the wicket, aged just 10 years old and son of the Chigwell skipper, he scored his first run for the side and survived several further deliveries to ensure that once again Chigwell were not bowled out. Edgware’s bowling figures were tidy on individual bases, the only disappointment being the 37 extras conceded. Shak Alam at 3 for 17 and Tony Allen 3 for 14 were the pick of the bowlers although no-one took any real punishment. Ellis (1 for 15), Barr (1 for 14) and Weinberg (1 for 13) all also met with some success, as did Nick Davis, deputising behind the stumps for the injured Sager, in taking two catches. It was a day when everything went right for Edgware and they were ultimately deserved winners by a considerable margin. |
