Newlands v Chigwell and Hainault Chigwell and Hainault 159 for 8 Chigwell and Hainault won by 59 runs Chigwell and Hainault attained their first victory for a year as captain Danny Myers and vice captain Lloyd Green led from the front with excellent personal performances. A rather worn and somewhat soggy wicket ensured that the ball behaved erratically and neither team found the conditions easy but in the end it was Chigwell that came to grips better on the day. It was Myers (60) that led the batting performance, participating in two fifty partnerships, firstly with Melvin Gold for 54 and then with Lloyd Green for 50. Gold had opened the innings and lost two partners on the unpredictable pitch before Myers joined him at the wicket. After some 22 overs and with the score on 79 Gold was dismissed after a cautious (some would say painstaking) 16 runs, but by that stage Chigwell were well set and with wickets in hand took advantage of the situation, especially when Green (14) and Myers were at the wicket. Simon Warren (11) and Gavin Stortz (12) also made double figures and there were 38 extras including 30 wides, which rounded up the Chigwell innings nicely. In many ways the conditions were as difficult for the bowlers as the batsmen and the variable bounce was difficult to come to terms with. However Segall (2 for 22), Sheldon (2 for 17), and M. Klavetz (2 for 28) took two wickets apiece with Lethbridge (1 for 27) also chipping in. There were also several dropped catches in the field which added to their frustration in seeing Chigwell post a sizeable total. Newlands found the going tough while batting and only Richard Kravetz (22) and J. Reiff (15) reached double figures as the inning petered out at a score of 100 for 8 in the allotted 35 overs. After an initially slow start for the first 10 overs, which actually was a similar pattern to the Chigwell innings, the middle order did not manage to pile on the runs in the way that Myers had earlier and defeat became somewhat inevitable. Chigwell's bowling was tidy with the opening pair Warren (0 for 5 off 5 overs) and Kaye (0 for 12 off 4 overs) bowling tightly without reward. First change bowler Green then did the real damage taking 4 wickets for just 7 runs off his allotted 7 overs. Gavin Stollar also chipped in two wickets, both well caught by debutant Eliot Solarz, and the other wicket-takers were Kevin Sinclair (1 for 27) and Jamie Berlin (1 for 20). Chigwell are delighted to have broken their long run of defeats and both teams will now look forward to their competitive season which begins next week, co-incidentally with another match against each other, this time on Chigwell's home ground which hopefully will provide a more predictable surface!! |
