Chigwell and Hainault v Newlands
35 over Maccabi Sunday 28 July 2002

Southgate: 195 all out (28 overs)
Chigwell and Hainault: 196 for 2 (26.3 overs)

Chigwell and Hainault won by 8 wickets

On one of the hottest days of the year, Chigwell & Hainault attempted to make it a hat trick of victories in a row since their defeat by the hands of Edgware on 16th June 2002. Newlands won the increasingly important toss and elected to bat. Despite the early loss of Etkind caught in the slip region off the bowling of the captain Danny Myers, Kritzas(34) set about dismantling the Chigwell bowling along with Watts, who posted the highest individual total of the innings(55). The tempo in the game changed however when Jeff Freedman made the breakthrough dismissing Kritzas and in the next over Berman departed off the bowling of Myers who finished with figures of 3 for 32 off 7 overs. Boland (25) fought bravely during the middle of the innings whilst all were departing before him but once he was dismissed off the bowling of Freedman, who finished with amazing figures of 2 for 17 runs off his allotted 7 overs, there was no way back for Newlands. At one stage a possible 230 were on the cards but steady bowling from Gavin Stollar(3-19), in his first full season for the East Enders, and a couple of wickets from Benji Myers brushed off the tail to give Newlands a defendable total of 195 with extras amassing to a total of 51 runs.

Chigwell & Hainault set about the total in an authorative manner with Jeff Freedman and Elliot Solarz, in only his second game for the club, putting on a partnership of 70 runs, the teams highest opening wicket stand of the season. At the 10 over mark, Chigwell were on 76 -1 well within the required run rate of 5.6 per over. Bowland restricted the scoring at one end with figures of 1-30 off 6 overs and Lethbridge finished with figures of 1-40. Another important contribution was Daniel Englesman(12) who played in the anchor role with Jeff to amount 97 runs for the second wicket partnership. However, the most outstanding player on the field was Jeff Freedman who notched his 1st century for nearly 4 years out in the wilderness with a compelling 115 not out to see Chigwell home with 8.3 overs to spare.
