We offer a full range of activities for young people of all ages

Chigwell and Hainault Nursery

Over the past 20 years Chigwell and Hainault Synagogue Nursery has become renowned locally for its high quality education across a broad curriculum. The nursery caters for up to 52 children from the age of 2–4 years (pre-reception). There are two classes; a ‘small’ class for ages 2-3 years and a ‘big’ class for ages 3-4 years.

There is also a large community hall which is shared by both classes and used for the sit and ride toys, table top activities, music and movement, computer, concerts, puppet shows and other forms of early learning. We offer a range of challenging and stimulating play activities, both indoors and outdoors, in a safe, secure and fun filled Jewish environment that promotes children’s overall development.

Our aim is to enhance children’s development and ensure that the children practice and take pride in their Jewish heritage and culture.  We plan and provide play opportunities which foster a unique child, positive relationships, enabling environments and learning and development, requirements needed to meet standards set out in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).  The curriculum guidance focuses on how children learn and what we as parents, carers and practitioners can do to encourage children’s learning.  The Governments EYFS identifies six Areas of early learning:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development.
  • Communication, Language and Literacy.
  • Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the World.
  • Physical Development.
  • Creative Development.

Every Child Matters: Change for Children is a new approach to the well-being of children and young people from birth to age 19.  The Government's aim is for every child, whatever their background or their circumstances, to have the support they need to:

  • Be healthy
  • Stay safe
  • Enjoy and achieve
  • Make a positive contribution
  • Achieve economic well-being

We have a high ratio of adults to children: 1:4 ages 2-3 years and 1:8 ages 3-4 years.   A key worker system is in place. The key worker will help your child to become familiar with the Nursery and to feel confident and safe within it.

They will develop a genuine bond; make your child feel happy and secure, confident to explore and to try out new things.  This also allows for individual care and attention to be given and enables children to progress at their own rate, including those with special needs.

Our healthy eating policy means that children are offered a variety of fresh fruit each day at snack time accompanied with milk.

All children aged 3 years, are entitled to up to two years of free education before reaching statutory school age (the first term following their 3rd birthday).  We also accept childcare vouchers.

Parental involvement is welcome in many of our nursery activities. Many local families still have fond memories of the weekly Shabbat role play parties, Purim fancy dress concerts, Chanukah concerts, Succah parties and end of year Leaver’s concerts.  Children are regularly visited by the wider community, i.e. community police, fire brigade, local council dignitaries, photographers (portraits), local ministers etc.

We listen to parents and treat each child as an individual, recognising that what works for one child does not necessarily work for another.

Run by Melanie Kaye and her well-loved band of ‘Aunties’, the nursery has regularly enjoyed commendations for its excellent standards in Ofsted reports (these can be viewed on the Ofsted Website: www.ofsted.gov.uk). The nursery is a member of the Pre-school Learning Alliance and the Agency for Jewish Education.

Opening Times
The nursery is open Monday to Friday between 9.15 am and 12.15 pm with the option of staying until 1.15 pm for lunch Monday – Thursday (extra minimal charge). Children wear the comfortable nursery uniform of sweatshirt, polo shirt and jogging bottoms, with boys wearing Tzitzit and Kippa, all of which can be purchased directly from the nursery.
